What happened

  • On 16 May, the ABC reported that a group of up to four Australian federal parliamentarians will attend the 20 May inauguration of Lai Ching-te as Taiwan’s next president.

  • The Chinese Embassy in Canberra issued a statement on 15 May criticising the visit and claiming that it “violate[s]” the “political foundation of China-Australia relations.”

  • Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade rejected China’s “incorrect assertions” and said that the visit is “consistent with Australia’s one-China policy and with past practice.”
