What happened

  • Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that Premier Li Qiang will be in Australia from 15 to 18 June for the first Chinese leader-level visit in more than seven years.

  • Prime Minister Albanese described the visit as “an important opportunity to engage directly on key issues for both our nations,” and said that “Australia continues to pursue a stable and direct relationship with China.”

  • The Chinese press reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson as saying: “China is willing to take this visit as an opportunity to work with Australia to strengthen high-level exchanges, enhance understanding and mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation, and jointly build a more mature, stable and fruitful China-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership.”
