What happened

  • The Australian government announced on 30 May that China had lifted its suspensions on five meat processing establishments with immediate effect.

  • Meanwhile, it was publicly revealed earlier this week that the Chinese Consulate-General in Sydney had written to state and federal parliamentarians chastising them for attending an event celebrating Taiwan’s presidential inauguration.

  • Although parliamentarians participating in such events is perfectly consistent with Australia’s one-China policy, the Chinese Consulate-General nevertheless warned of the risk of damaging “the hard-earned momentum towards improving China-Australia relations.”
