What happened
The Australian government announced on 30 May that China had lifted its suspensions on five meat processing establishments with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, it was publicly revealed earlier this week that the Chinese Consulate-General in Sydney had written to state and federal parliamentarians chastising them for attending an event celebrating Taiwan’s presidential inauguration.
Although parliamentarians participating in such events is perfectly consistent with Australia’s one-China policy, the Chinese Consulate-General nevertheless warned of the risk of damaging “the hard-earned momentum towards improving China-Australia relations.”
