What happened

  • Australia’s Treasury Wine Estates announced on 12 March that it had been advised of a Chinese Ministry of Commerce interim draft determination outlining a proposed removal of China’s duties on Australian wine.

  • A final determination is expected in the “coming weeks,” presumably before 31 March, which is when Australia has warned it’ll resume World Trade Organization dispute proceedings if a plan for the removal of the wine duties hasn’t been agreed.

  • The Australian wine industry is “cautiously optimistic” about the final determination and the Albanese government says it’ll “keep advocating for the removal of remaining trade impediments for Australian producers and processors.”
